 Donald Friend (1915- 1989) was a leading member of the Merioola Group during the 1940s. He was awarded the Blake prize in 1955. In the late 1960s he settled in Bali, later moving back to Australia in 1982. A major retrospective of Friend’s work was held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1990. In 2001 four volumes of his diaries were published by the National Library of Australia. Donald Friend’s work is held by the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries and many regional galleries.
