John Olsen (b. 1928, Newcastle) is one of Australia’s greatest living artists – best known for his iconic landscapes teeming with life, flowing with his signature wild lines and bold colours. Olsen has given acute evocations of native wildlife and Aussie larrikins, but his chief subject remains the immense and intractable Australian landscape. The joyful immediacy of Olsen’s mark defines the artist’s work. An intuitive process, Olsen often points to “the line that takes itself for a walk”.
