Jeffrey Smart (b.1921, Adelaide – d.2013, Arezzo, Italy) is an iconic expatriate realist painter, acclaimed for his precisely delineated urban and industrial landscapes. Believing he should paint from the environment around him, Smart’s work leveraged the play of shapes, light, and the geometry of the objects that intrigued him from the urban environment. Smart’s compositions of urban and industrial settings are renowned for their highly finished and precise qualities and often feature a solitary figure that lends the works an air of suspense and anticipation.
