After studying in Adelaide, Richard Hayley Lever (1876 - 1958) travelled abroad to study in Cornwall, Paris, and New York. His skillful seascapes earned him a teaching position at the Art Students' League in New York, and he later won the Carnegie Prize from the city's National Academy of Design. Lever's work is held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
