|Weaver Hawkins (1893 – 1977) was an important painter of the Modernist movement of the 1940s. Born in England, he was severely wounded at battle of the Somme in 1916 and began painting as a form of rehabilitation. He arrived in Sydney in 1935 and exhibited throughout the 1940s. The Art Gallery of New South Wales held a survey and later touring exhibition of Hawkins’ work in 1976. His work is held in the NGA, AGNSW, AGSA, QAG and several regional galleries |
