The
artworks I make are directly inspired by the natural
wonders I've been lucky enough to witness. They are
usually a result of travel to extreme places by unusual
means.
Most of the chosen imagery is water based either
mid ocean, or along that dramatic zone where land
meets sea. Most works exclude man and the complication
of
his influence.
Water, land, light, wind and movement,
together with their charged interaction are the starting
points for
my paintings. The ultimate works depict favourite
places that have punctuated the memory - either by
sheer beauty,
awesome power or atmospheric foreboding.
I equally attempt
to evoke the feeling that our natural environment
is indeed the total power - and should
be looked after.
Most works are constructed from memory
and expedition sketchbooks. They unveil themselves
through a layered
technique of glazes and a multitude of tiny marks.
I paint like I draw, intoxicated by the principal
like nature, that many small components and layers
make
up the bigger picture.
The attention given to each tiny little mark in
each layer, somehow envelops me in a closer memory
or that world.
